For those who frequent this blog, this post will differ from the normal entries. But like any author, every so often you have to step outside the comfort zone. In this case, the deviation from my usual entries was well worth it.
I must disclose that I’m not a connoisseur of rap music, but there has been a buzz in Portland about a local rap band called Veteran Kings. Being the sort that often succumbs to curiosity, I decided to check these guys out last week at a local venue in downtown Portland. My curiosity served me well.
Upon the opening song, I was impressed with the beat and lyrics of the artists. At the forefront of Veteran Kings is Haven and Quincy Chance: a sibling duo that pounded out their set with streetwise authenticity. When they began ripping through their song Survival, I had momentarily forgotten my high-hair, heavy metal past, and found myself wanting to shake a leg upon the club’s floor. Though the attempt to drag my date upon the dance floor ended in failure, I was still lost in the rhythmic synergy of their mixes and vocals.
After the show, I spoke to Quincy Chance and inquired about the inspiration behind the music. With a smile filled with humility, he shrugged his shoulders saying, “All my music just comes to me.” As our small talk ensued, I could not help but notice how grounded both Haven and Quincy were. Despite the gritty and street savvy content of their material, both these artists possessed a cordial and humble demeanor…in my opinion, a true sign of greatness.
When I saw Veteran Kings at Ted’s (formally Berbati’s Pan) there was no charge at the door, but I would have gladly paid to see them perform. If you are reading this and are from the Portland, Oregon area…you definately need to check these guys out.
There are Veteran Kings links included in this post. Please take the time to peruse them and support this local band. Your time and money will not be wasted.
