The Last Protector by Daniel Starr is a wonderful stew consisting of high-tech and medieval mayhem. Two individuals hurl themselves from the future to correct the mistakes of entwining time lines. When reading this, I could not help but be reminded of Westworld. No…there are not malfunctioning, gun slinging robots, but there was a feel to the backdrop of this book that conjured mental images of that film. The story moves along nicely between the frantic battle scenes and the surreal universe they interact with. And the glue that holds everything together is the relationship between Jape and Saughblade. Their banter carries us through the slow portions of the story until the action resumes. An enjoyable novel – especially for those who like their genres blended together.
